At least that's been the case in Virginia and Georgia. And that's quite a new twist for a Yankee-prone denomination, one that has more than 700 congregations in Pennsylvania but just one in Mississippi.

Although Baptist churches are located throughout the USA, the great majority of Baptists live in the southern United States, and the Baptist church has historically exerted a powerful influence in that region of the country.

On Tuesday, Gonzales will speak to the highest decision-making body of the nation's largest Protestant denomination in Nashville.
