Band Names: Band Members

Begin the name selection process by asking each band member to compile a list of names. Spend a couple of weeks putting each individual list onto a master list. Then, at a band meeting, begin reading off the names to see if any of them strikes a chord. If nothing comes of this meeting, don't force it. Some of the most incredible names came accidentally.
This is part 2, a redux of SparkPlugged’s 5 cool Japanese band names article. Have a look at some of Japan’s wackiest band names, usually comprised of English words. How are some of these names dreamt up? One can only guess: combinations of words/letters than “sound cool” to non-native English speakers (this often employs unique and funny words as well as rhymes and alliteration). Maybe some of the names mean something to the band but combinations are often so seemingly random, that “special” meaning is indetectable for an outsider (aka: non-band member).
Barenaked Ladies — The band members picked the name because it was sexual, yet innocent. Another story is that Ed Robertson and Steve Page were bored while at a concert, and started thinking up the worst possible names for bands. Barenaked Ladies was one of them, and as a joke, Ed booked them as that name for their first gig.
A band member saw AC/DC on a sewing machine and figured it has something to do with power. He was right, it means 'Alternating Current / Direct Current'. The band didn't realize it was ... slang for bi-sexual, which caused a few awkward moments in their early days. A silly rumor claims the acronym 'Anti-Christ Devil's Children'.

A few of probabilities: 1) When the band members dropped out of school to work on the band, their principal said "it'll be a green day in hell before you make anything of yourselves". 2) When you smoked pot and chilled all day, that is a "Green Day". The lads used to skip school and do this. 3) A there was a sign in the movie "Soilent Green" stating Green Day.
Some of the band members were interested in astrology and noted that a few of them were born under the House of Mercury. As Mercury is the name for both the messenger of the gods and the liquid metal, the latter of which is ... called quicksilver, Quicksilver Messenger Service was chosen.
