- Strategic Defense Initiative (Sdi) -- Ballistic Missile Defense Organization
The research was controlled by the Strategic Defense Initiative Office, an agency of the Department of Defense until 1993, when it was renamed the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. Department of Defense cost estimates for SDI-related spending during fiscal years 1984-1994 amounted to US$32.6 billion. An independent report by the Congressional Research Service arrived at a much higher figure of US$70.7 billion [1]. - Iran -- Missiles
If it was a preemptive strike on the part of Iran, they'd be inviting armageddon by taking out a US carrier. Plus, if it was a premptive strike, the missile could quite easily hit a tanker or other civilian vessel by mistake. How do these things work? Heat seeking? Can you pick out a vessel amongst a load of them (the Straits of Hormuz is pretty busy). - Scud -- Missiles
Scud missiles are Russian-made version of German's WWII V-2 rocket. There are four types of Scud missiles: Scud A (SS-1b), Scud B (SS-1c), Scud C (SS-1d), Scud D (SS-1e), (SS stands for surface-to-surface). These missiles are considered to be short range ballistic missiles. They are capable of traveling up to 1,100km (700 miles). The engine on a short range ballistic missile will automatically shut down after about 80 seconds. Within these 80 seconds, 4,300kg of fuel and oxidizer (out of a total of 4,500kg) will be used up. With only a fewkg of substances left, it is very difficult for the missile to reach it target precisely. - Topol -- Missiles
The single-warhead Topol-M is an advanced version of the silo-based and mobile Topol intercontinental ballistic missile. The solid-propellant three- stage Topol-M missile complex, with a standardized (silo and mobile) missile, is to become the foundation of the Russian strategic nuclear forces in the 21st century. It is planned to accommodate Topol-M both on self-propelled launchers as well as in silos. High survivability of the mobile complex is achieved by the capability of offroad movement, of a continuous change in location and of a missile launch from any point along the movement route. The Moscow Institute of Heat Engineering (MIT) State Enterprise is the only plant in Russia building such missiles today. - Missile Command
Missile Command 3D is a three-in-one game cartridge. In all three games you control three missile bases protecting a number of cities. You use your bases to fire at the enemy missiles descending on your cities. The object is to defeat as many missile waves as possible before your cities are destroyed. - Missile Command -- Cities
The object of this updated version of Missile Command is simple and still the same. Your planet is being attacked by alien forces who are out to destroy and seize the planet. In preparing for the invasion, Earth has built a powerful defense system. Several antiballistic missile (ABM) bases have been created, and it's your responsibility as base commander to protect and defend the cities. The enemy begins by firing interplanetary ballistic missiles which are aimed to destroy your cities and missile base, and it's your task to stop the enemy before your happy and harmonious planet is destroyed. - Missile Command -- Games
Missile Command 3D is a 3D rendered version of the original Missile Command arcade game for the Atari Jaguar console. It is reported to be the only working Jag game with VR capabilities. - Cuban Missile Crisis
The teacher will show a PowerPoint presentation and discuss the events that preceded the Cuban Missile Crisis campaign highlighting important facts using a 13-day timeline model filled with historical images. The teacher will then distribute to each student a handout showing Cuba and the United Sates. The students will need to label their maps with the following: Cuba, Florida, Havana, Miami, the distance between the two countries, and the body of water that separates the two countries. Next, students will be shown a large-scale map identifying the missile silos that were located on the island of Cuba. Following this, the students will listen to the broadcasted speech of President John F. Kennedy’s televised address to the people of the United States on October 22, 1962. Students will follow along with a written copy of his speech. - Lockheed Martin -- Lockheed Martin Missiles
Lockheed Martin is the nation’s top defense contractor, the brains behind such high-tech military hardware as the F-16 jet fighter and a variety of land and sea missiles. In 2001, the company landed the biggest defense contract in history when it was named the main contractor for the Joint Strike Fighter. Considering that access is the name of the game when securing such lucrative contracts, it’s no surprise that Lockheed splits its campaign money equally between Democrats and Republicans. All told, NASA and the Defense Department account for roughly 80 percent of the company’s annual sales. - Cuban Missile Crisis -- United States
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a confrontation between the United States of America, the Soviet Union, and Cuba during the Cold War. The Russians call it the "Caribbean Crisis," while the Cubans call it the "October Crisis." The crisis ranks with the Berlin Blockade as one of the major confrontations of the Cold War, and is often regarded as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to escalating into a nuclear war. The climax period of the crisis began on October 14, 1962, when U.S. reconnaissance photographs taken by an American U-2 spy plane revealed missile bases being built in Cuba, and ended two weeks later on October 28, 1962, when U.S. President John F. Kennedy and the intercession of U.N. Secretary-General, U Thant, reached an agreement that Cuba was no threat toward the United States.
