Ballad

Ballad makers weren't picky about their rhymes. Less than perfect rhyme combinations such as again/ten, blame/nane, mair/before, king/nane, wrong/won, and pap/that abound in ballads. In fact, a ballad with perfect rhymes is automatically suspect; as balladry was originally an oral tradition, and dialects varied widely, the words didn't necessarily sound like their written-down version. A singer could make even the most unlikly of rhymes work well.

The "Ballad of Mulan" is a folksong from Northern Dynasties China. It recounts the story of Mulan, a girl who goes to war in place of her father. The pseudo-historical personage of Mulan probably lived in the fifth century, when the Toba, who dominated north China, were engaged in a long war with the Rouran on their northern frontier. It is thought the ballad was collected into an anthology of yuefu in the mid-sixth century, and later popularised during the Tang dynasty.
Ballad stanza A four-line stanza, known as a quatrain, consisting of alternating eight- and six-syllable lines. Usually only the second and fourth lines rhyme (an abcb pattern). Coleridge adopted the ballad stanza in "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner."
Cover Image The Ballad of Frankie Silver raises issues which will captivate folklorists, historians, and others who research and document community turning points. The relationship between history, legend, and ballad has never been so clearly illustrated, and the film's feminist slant resonants with contemporary audiences.

Ballad of Josie scene Unfortunately, "The Ballad of Josie" was not received in New York as a first class project. It opened as a double-bill with Charlton Heston's "Counterpoint" in wide release all over the state in neighbourhood theatres and on 42nd Street at the New Amsterdam, signalling the beginning of the end of Doris Day's great film career.
