Baldness: Male Pattern Baldness

About 95% of all cases of hair loss are the result of androgenetic alopecia (... known as male pattern baldness in men). Androgenetic alopecia occurs much more frequently in men than in women. It affects roughly 40 million men in the United States. Approximately 25% of men begin balding by age 30; two thirds begin balding by age 60.

In some cases, male pattern baldness can be retarded by medication. Your doctor can discuss these options with you, including the cost and the likelihood of some success. However, the effect lasts only as long as treatment continues. Hair transplants are sometimes undertaken. Wigs, as a cosmetic replacement for lost hair, are much less popular in Ireland today. No amount of hair loss is as embarrassing as a bad wig.

It will be interesting to see if future studies show that Proscar, the drug that prevents male-pattern baldness... prevents heart attacks. Doctors prescribe Propecia, a drug that blocks dihydrotestosterone, to treat male pattern baldness (4). Dihydrotestosterone has been shown to stimulate the growth of smooth muscle cells that block arteries (5). It will be interesting to see if future studies show that Propecia, the drug that prevents male-pattern baldness also prevents heart attacks.

Although androgenic alopecia is the most common cause of male pattern baldness, pathologic causes of alopecia must ... be considered in the evaluation of hair loss in men. Alopecia typically is divided into scarring and nonscarring types (Table 1). Scarring alopecia is typically seen in patients with infectious or connective tissue diseases. Androgenic alopecia is a nonscarring variety. Table 1 lists other causes of nonscarring alopecia.5

Though there are an array of self-described “miracle cures” for male pattern baldness, there is at this time no wholly scientifically accepted method of “ending” male pattern baldness. This is because for many men, it is a genetic issue; and cannot be prevented topically. However, some men use Minoxidil (Rogaine) and experience positive results. Finasteride is an orally administered medication that is ... proving to be a good choice for some men experiencing male pattern baldness. It’s long-term effects are not well known, however, and there have been some side effects reported, such as erectile dysfunction and loss of sexual drive.

Male-pattern baldness is a result of a gene in the body that converts large quantities of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). This DHT hormone, though helpful during fetal development, is devastating to hair follicles, causing them to become damaged and shrunken. The usual life of a hair follicle is 5 years, 4 of those spent growing and the last year being stagnant, but follicles that are damaged fall out and are not replaced by new follicles. This is why male pattern baldness is gradual but irreversible in its later stages.
