Balding areas of the scalp may be surgically removed to decrease the appearance of baldness. Scalp reduction is usually used in conjunction with grafts or flaps. Devices may be used to stretch the scalp, expanding areas where hair grows. The effectiveness of scalp reduction depends on the degree of hair loss and the elasticity of the scalp.

Some, diseases of the scalp can ... cause baldness. Many people think that dandruff causes hair loss but this is not true. In children, fungal infections commonly lead to hair loss. Sometimes, bacterial infections can cause baldness.

Alopecia Totalis - Complete baldness, all the hair on the scalp is lost. This is an uncommon head hair defect with no known cause, but it does respond to the calf thymus preparation. Thymuskin Shampoo is an effective treatment for Alopecia Totalis and the temporary use of ThymuSkin products is highly likely to treat the hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth.

While male- and female-pattern baldness result in permanent hair loss, other factors can cause temporary loss of hair. For instance, the drop in the level of estrogen at the end of pregnancy can cause a woman's hair to shed more readily. Two or three months after a woman stops taking birth control pills, she may experience the same effect, since birth control pills produce hormone changes that mimic pregnancy.

When it comes to male baldness, generally speaking, it's genetic. Male hair loss happens because of a chemical called Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which builds up around the hair follicle and eventually kills both the follicle and the hair. It's the hair follicle's resistance to DHT that's genetic. If you have relatives with thin hair or who are balding, there's a pretty good chance at some point you'll experience the same male baldness or hair thinning. So now's you're chance to blow off genetics, and you can take control.

It was previously believed that baldness was inherited. While there is some basis for this belief, both parents contribute to their offspring's likelihood of hair loss. Most likely, inheritance is technically "autosomal dominant with mixed penetrance" (see 'baldness folklore' below)
