Badfinger: Pete Ham
built 632 days ago
Badfinger spent the early months of 1975 trying to find a way to earn a living. Jackson said that touring agents and record labels were routinely turning them away because of their restrictive contract with Polley. Ham tried many times to contact Polley by telephone during these months but was never able to reach him. Without being able to secure new work and without salary checks coming in from Polley, the money situation became bleak for the band.

Despite critical acclaim and a handful of hit singles, Badfinger never achieved the massive success many had predicted. On April 23, 1975, frontman Pete Ham committed suicide; bassist Tom Evans and guitarist Joey Molland reactivated the group with a new lineup in 1978, but after years of infighting, Evans took his own life on Nov. 19, 1983.

Badfinger began life in Wales as the Iveys, and had been knocking around London for a while, occasionally opening for the likes of the Yardbirds and Moody Blues. In 1968, after several lineup shuffles, they were signed to the new Apple label; the members at that time were Welsh leader and singer/guitarist Pete Ham, early member and bassist Ron Griffiths, drummer Mike Gibbins, and new guitarist/singer Tom Evans, from Liverpool but based in Wales.
