Bacteria are of major importance in the food industry. On the one hand, they cause food spoilage and food-borne diseases, and so must be controlled. On the other hand, they improve food flavor and nutrition.

Bacteria ... cause diseases in other animals and in plants. Anthrax is a bacterial disease that infects many animals, especially cattle and sheep. Plant diseases caused by bacteria include fire blight, which occurs in apple and pear trees, and soft rot, which decays some fruits and vegetables. Bacteria also cause growths called crown galls, which attack various plants.

Bacteria cause disease. Most of these bacteria, like those listed below make their presence felt immediatley and may or may not result in death. Some people though, can be infected with a bacterium that normally causes a disease and not show any harmfull effects at all, people like this are called carriers. A sad example of this was Typhoid Mary who was identified as a carrier for typhoid fever in 1906.

Bacteria exist almost everywhere. There are thousands of kinds of bacteria, most of which are harmless to human beings. Large numbers of bacteria live in the human body but cause no harm. Some species cause diseases, but many others are helpful.
