After mild sucess the band wanted a heavier sound, so they they asked Chad Allen to leave and replaced him with the middle Bachman brother, Tim. All but one aspect of the band had the sound they wanted, the name. BraveBelt just didn't sound like the name of a hard rocking band, but that soon changed. In 1971 the band had stopped at a truck stop in Windsor Ontairio where they happened to notice an issue of the trucking magazine "Overdrive". It was then that C.F. Tim Bachman left in early 1974 because of limited performance skills and personal lifestyle issues, and was replaced by Blair Thornton. The first album with the modified lineup, 1974's Not Fragile, became a hit, including the #1 single "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" and AOR favorite "Roll on Down the Highway". The band continued to steadily produce successful albums through the mid-1970s including Four Wheel Drive and Head On (both 1975).
[T]he last "original" BTO album, Freeways, was released, with only one heavy-guitar-crunch tune, from Fred Turner, which was more reminisicent of Brave Belt than recent BTO. All the other tunes were written by Randy Bachman, reportedly because the other members of the band did not feel they had any songs good enough for recording; and all but Freeways were sung by Randy Bachman; C.F. Turner refused to have his photo taken head on for the cover. Their style was starting to dissipate, with the heavy sound of Fred Turner fading and the more country-rock side of Randy Bachman showing (this side was very evident in his solo Survivor and nearly absent from his later solos Any Road and Merge).
