Bachata,or Música de Amargue/Music of Bitterness originally was music created by the lowest of the low adrift in Santo Domingo. It was played in the cabarets and whorehouse's of the capital where these people frequented. Its forms, instrumentation and so on are originally derived from country music, but it developed as a result of the displacement of rural people to the cities. The early Bachata -- La Sufrida, is all about this rootlessness, loss, drunkenness, whoring, etc. It was even banned from radio play because it was full of double entendre, and in general dealt with low-lifes, so they censored it. The rich, affluent, and city people would not listen to this type of music. If they did they would not admit to it.

Bachata music has four beats to a bar. Three steps are taken to four beats of music. As with salsa, the step timing is three steps and then a one-beat pause. Outside the Dominican Republic, Bachata is widely danced in the States, in most of mainland Europe (especially Italy) and even the Far East.

Bachata music itself comes from an older style of love music known as the bolero, though it quickly evolved and changed. Bolero songs celebrated innocent, pure love and lovers who were unendingly faithful. Bachata music, on the other hand, took root in the poor and urban places where it was most often heard, and because of that, the songs became a good deal more sensual and significantly raunchier. The music itself is played in 4/4 time and it is the instrumentation that distinguishes it from so many other types of Latin music. Bachata music uses an amplified guitar, whether acoustic or electric, and in many of the more modern songs, you can hear a distinct reverb or echo. Bongo drums offer a solid percussive beat, while maracas are often used to keep the time.

Bachata was created and primarily used by servants, who used to play it when they got off of work. They made the music out of ordinary objects like those commonly found in a backyard (Trashcans, Fences, etc). In some rural areas of the Dominican Republic, bachata means trash, but most citizens agree that it means a party. Others say that bachata is derived from the Italian Ballata, which was a popular form of music in Italy centuries ago. Bachata did not begin as the popular dance that it is today and it was not acceptable among the people of the higher societies. It was originally danced by prostitutes in brothels and even "guardias" or army men.
