Baccarat met a formidable challenge at the beginning of the French Revolution. Economic instability was common in France at this time... the situation worsened as the country collapsed into civil war. By 1816, inflation caused the company to operate at a loss and the work force was reduced to less than 70 people. During that same year, the factory was sold to a Belgian expert in the production of glass. The purchaser, Monsieur d’Artigues bought the company with 2,845 ounces of solid gold.

Baccarat first began marking its work with a registered mark in 1860. The mark was a label affixed to the bottom of the work. In the period 1846-1849 Baccarat signed some of their high quality glass paperweights with the letter B and the year date in a composite cane. A special paperweight dated 1853 was found under the cornerstone of a bomb damaged church in Baccarat when construction recommenced after World War 2.

The Baccarat table is rectangular and about the size of a Crap's table. It has even spaces for players, size on each side, numbered 1 through 6 on one side, and 7 through 12 on the other. Each player's position features three betting areas, marked Player, Banker, and Tie. There are 12 little boxes, called Commission Boxes, where dealers place the players' appropriate commission payments due the House before each player leaves the game.
