Yeah, I know this isn't a picture of Babylon 5. I'm just messing with you. When the Centauri decide to send a representative to the newly-constructed Babylon 5, they choose an individual who stands for the values of their glorious Republic. More specifically, they looked for a drunken idiot with big hair[3]. After figuring out that set of criteria only eliminated two, maybe three Centauri males at the most they further narrow it down to the one person they know would be ignored even if the listeners' entire species existence depended on it[4]. In this, Londo Mollari was the proven choice. Once there, he spends most of his time either drinking, whining or using his genitalia to gamble. This happy state of affairs would have continued until the good Doctor would have been forced to remove Londo's pickled, shrivled liver had Londo not had the misfortune to whine to just the wrong person.
This language was originally used for accounting purposes and continued to develop throughout the era in which Babylon stood. The scientific, logical mentality that governed their lives, extended into, as well as received from, their religion. They were, in fact, a very religious and superstitous people, but the deities they believed in had concrete ties to the realm of physicality. Babylonian people believed in Polytheism. To believe in multiple Gods seems slightly absurd to the modern person. However, the effect it had on its people is similar to the increasingly popular modern religion known as Atheism.

The field of battle is money and it is on the grounds of commerce that Babylon shall be judged, fall swiftly and rise again. The moneymakers of the world will bewail their losses when Babylon is spoiled, but it is not destruction. The Queen of the South will rise up to denounce this generation. When Babylon flourishes again it will be a terrible time for the nations, including the people of God. "I sit a queen and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow." Babylon will cling to the spiritual connection of her heritage as the spouse of the Lord, but it is apostasy, the habitation of devils and the hold of every foul spirit.

The Ishtar Gate of Babylon was built during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II (604- 562 BC). The foundations of the gate were discovered between 1899 and 1914, including numerous glazed bricks and unglazed figures. The entire Ishtar Gate was reconstructed to a height of 47 feet and now resides at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
