Economically, baby boomers represent an even bigger future challenge. As the baby boomers grow older this group will distort Australia's non-working population, just as they increased its working population throughout the 1960s and 1970s. An older non-working population will put a greater strain on Australia's hospitals, aged-care services and pensions with many commentators predicting a financial crisis.

At the back end of the baby boom population is the group turning 40 this year. Women in this age group should start thinking about getting a baseline mammogram. Exercise, too, plays a more important role.

The image sometimes presented of rock-climbing, marathon-running baby boomers is a misnomer when applied to the whole group. While advances in medical technology and drugs and reduced smoking keep adding to those longevity projections, more people ages 45-64 in 2003 reported themselves as physically inactive than as regular fitness participants, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
