B5: Vitamin B5
built 643 days ago
Browse Pantothenic acid, a member of the B vitamin clan (technically vitamin B5), is everywhere. It can be found in all living cells and, at least to some extent, in all foods. Appropriately, its name comes from the Greek word pantos, meaning "everywhere."
In addition to poor dietary intake, digestive problems are the most common contributing factor to B5 deficiency. The reason for this connection between poor digestion and B5 deficiency involves the CoA form of B5 that is typically found in food. Proper digestion is required to release vitamin B5 from this CoA form and allow it to be absorbed into the body from the small intestine.
The body has trouble producing enough coenzyme A for the breakdown of fatty acids even though the supply of vitamin B5 may be "adequate." It has nothing to do with the other two components of coenzyme A, but is merely a matter of getting the body to absorb the necessary B5 and actually produce the coenzyme A. Even though the body is capable of doing this, it doesn't do it efficiently because it lacks the proper genetic programming.
