Avon Tyrrell is an outdoor activity and residential centre for all groups of people. You can use the centre for holidays, training courses and to take part in all kinds of activities. It's a very special place with a unique atmosphere.

Avon was one of the counties in the "first tranche" of reviews conducted by the Banham Commission in the 1990s. The Commission recommended that it and its districts be abolished and replaced with four unitary authorities. The Avon (Structural Change) Order 1995 was debated in the Commons on 22 February 1995.[1]

The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer New York begins at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan Saturday, October 1st. Walkers will trek up to 26.2 miles through the Big Apple's boroughs Saturday, camp out at Randall's Island Saturday night, and walk another 13.1 miles back to South Street Seaport Sunday, culminating with a moving closing ceremony. To launch the global event series, a New York breast cancer survivor will travel to Spain with a Global Connection Ribbon, which has been worn throughout all eight of the 2005 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer events in the US, and will participate in an awareness and fundraising event in that country. The Global Connection Ribbon Tour is sponsored by Novartis Oncology, and Global Connection Ribbons will be passed from survivor to survivor in awareness and fundraising events held in coordination in the following countries:

The Avon Foundation and Ms. Witherspoon will partner in raising awareness for the Foundation's programs in the areas of breast cancer, domestic violence and emergency relief. The Avon Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity founded in 1955 with the mission of championing the health and well being of women globally through its philanthropic efforts.

Avon was formed under the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974. It took in the areas of the former county boroughs of Bristol and Bath, and areas from the administrative counties of Gloucestershire (Kingswood, Mangotsfield, and the rural districts of Warmley, Sodbury (most) and Thornbury (most)), and Somerset (Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon, Keynsham, Norton-Radstock, Portishead, and the rural districts of Bathavon, Long Ashton, Axbridge (much), and Clutton (much). Like most of the new counties created by the Act, its boundaries were substantially trimmed from its inception, with Frome and Bradford on Avon removed from the proposed area.
