Aventura is a relatively young city. Until the late seventies, this area of Miami, formerly Biscayne Gardens was still almost all swampland. Development in this area in earnest did not begin until the late seventies and early eighties. The Oxford Development Company is responsible for many of those first condominium towers that now comprise Aventura. This same development company ... constructed the Aventura Mall, the largest shopping mall in Florida. The popularity of the Aventura Mall, which opened its 2.3 million square feet of retail space to the public in 1983, is responsible for the rapid growth that Aventura has exhibited in its short history.

Aventura Mall opened in unincorporated Miami-Dade County. The area had been known by the name "Aventura" given to it by a local developer, for several years prior to the building of the mall. The name became more well known because of the existence of the mall, and when the surrounding area was eventually incorporated into a city in 1996 it was officially named the City of Aventura.
