The Avengers (... known as The Avengers: United They Stand), was an animated series consisting of thirteen episodes. It originally aired from October 30, 1999 to February 26, 2000, and was produced by Avi Arad and distributed by 20th Century Fox Television. This series featured a team comprising of Ant-Man (leader); the Wasp; Wonder Man; Tigra; Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch. The Falcon and the Vision were added to the roster in the opening episodes. Captain America and Iron Man only make one appearance each, while Thor does not appear in the series outside of the opening titles.

The Avengers were a San Francisco-based hardcore/punk group which formed in 1977. The original line-up featured Penelope Houston on vocals; guitarist Greg Westermark (aka Greg Scars) on guitar; bassist Jonathan Postal; and Danny Furious (aka Danny Fearless) on drums. The band played its first gig at the Mabuhay Gardens in June 1977. At a later point, bassist Jonathan left to be replaced by Jimmy Wilsey (aka Jimmy Blaze).

The Young Avengers tells the tale of a group of young teen superheroes, modeled after some of the main Avengers such as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk. The team was put together by The Vision, an android and long time Avenger as a contingency plan in case the original Avengers ever disappeared. The Young Avengers continue to work together, despite being refused by Captain America to train them without their parents consent.

In June, the Avengers played their first show, opening for the Nuns at San Francisco's pioneering punk venue the Mabuhay Gardens. In August, Jimmy Wisley joined the band as bassist (replacing Jonathan Postal, who went on to form the Readymades), and the Avengers' classic lineup was complete. The band soon became one of the most popular bands on California's budding punk rock scene, though at that time this limited the band to a handful of clubs in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In 1977, L.A.'s premier punk label Dangerhouse Records released a three-song EP from the group, featuring "We Are the One," "Car Crash," and "I Believe in Me." The record received enthusiastic reviews and relatively strong sales, but no larger labels were interested in signing the group. In early 1978, the group scored what seemed like a golden opportunity: opening for the Sex Pistols at San Francisco's Winterland on the final date of the notorious British punk band's first American tour. By all accounts, the Avengers delivered an impressive set (stronger than the Pistols, according to many eyewitnesses), and the group struck up a friendship with Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, who agreed to produce a record for the group.

Back in 2001, A&E released The Avengers - The Complete Emma Peel Mega-Set, a 16-DVD, 51-episode collection of every episode of the classic British show with Diana Rigg in it as the sexy, savvy heroine. The discs were in their individual keepcases, which were housed in an orange slipcover box. That set, then and now, goes for $199.95 SRP, but unfortunately the only extras on board this set was a photo gallery of rare production stills from the Steed & Peel years.

Nonetheless, the Avengers finished the 2007 season with a 9-7 record and won their first playoff game in franchise history, a 64-42 victory over the Utah Blaze. But that triumph was followed by a 52-20 loss in the quarterfinals to the Chicago Rush.
