In May of 2006, a unit of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. requested a 71.5 percent increase in Florida auto insurance rates. State Farm is the largest insurer in Florida. Other insurers have followed suit, and many families are having trouble paying insurance premiums that continue to rise much faster than inflation.

According to the report, 27 states experienced an increase in their auto insurance rates from 2004 to 2005. However, many of the nation’s largest states actually saw their rates decrease. New Yorkers paid an average of $3,165 for automobile insurance in 2005—a 3.4% decrease from 2004. And Louisiana residents paid an average of $3,100—a 4.9% decrease from 2004.

Nationally, State Farm will pay out $1.25 billion in dividends to its auto insurance policyholders in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and the Canadian province of New Brunswick.
