On an Australia vacationyou will enjoy long, warm summers. In fact, many returning holiday makers say Australia enjoys the finest climate on earth. Few could argue. The southern areas of Australia experience temperate climate with cool winters and fresh summers. In the north, the sub- tropical climate brings warm days and mild winters. Remember, because Australia lies in the Southern Hemisphere its seasons are the reverse of North America and Europe.

Australia is mostly arid and semi-arid: the center is desert and much agricultural land is poor quality by the standards of continents with richer soil. The south east is temperate and the north tropical. Australia was massively deforested for agricultural purposes: forest areas survive in extensive national parks and some other areas. Australia is prone to severe drought and water restrictions are currently in place in some areas... these shouldn't affect travellers as they mostly relate to watering gardens and washing cars.

Australia is geographically diverse, partly owing to its immense size. The centre of the continent is desert, known to Australians as the Outback. The vast majority of the population is concentrated around the eastern and south-eastern coasts.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and have an AWD vehicle, the Oodnadatta track that courses through South Australia could be just the ticket. As Rod Eime reports, the beautiful journey brings continual discovery.

: Australia is in the southern hemisphere and the seasons are opposite to those in Europe and North America. There are two climatic zones: the tropical zone (in the north above the Tropic of Capricorn) and the temperate zone. The tropical zone (consisting of 40 per cent of Australia) has two seasons, summer (wet) and winter (dry), while the temperate zone has all four seasons.
