Unless you are on a specially organized coach tour, most visitors will approach Auschwitz from Cracow. The simplest way of getting to the museum is by bus from the main station. Trains are less frequent but take roughly the same amount of time; about one and a half hours. The latter is the more unsettling choice, and although trains no longer run to the camps themselves, the railway line is still clearly visible at Birkenau, right up to where the crematoriums once stood.

In 1941 the chemical company IG Farben built a factory at Auschwitz, which used slave labour. By 1943 there were about 7,000 forced labourers working for IG Farben and by 1944 about 11,000. Most of them died.

About 700 prisoners tried to escape from different Auschwitz camps. Only 300 succeeded. Guards caught the families of the prisoners who escaped or tried to escape. They kept them as prisoners. They showed the family members to other prisoners to prevent any escape attempts.
