Auschwitz: People
built 671 days ago
In June, 1941, Heinrich Himmler ordered that Auschwitz be greatly increased in size. Gas Chambers disguised as Bathhouses were added. Rudolf Hoss, the camp commander, introduced Zyklon-B gas, that enabled 2,000 people at a time to be killed. After the war Hoss claimed that around 3,000,000 were killed at Auschwitz.
Little is known about the number of people who died at Auschwitz and other camps. It is thought to be a large number. The Nazis destroyed most of the records. Studies to arrive at the figures depend on the witnesses and persons of Nuremberg Trials. In some case, survivors’ accounts helped to fix some rough figures.
Every year some 500,000 visitors come to Oswiecim, an industrial town of 45,000, to see the Auschwitz. Half of them are Poles, and the rest mostly from the USA, Germany, the UK, France, Italy, and Israel. Over 25 million people have already visited the place.

Auschwitz: A New History [A]s Rees unfolds the singular atrocity of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where one million died, the recurring theme is just how easily it happened. From the monstrous planners to the demoralized bystanders, Europe was full of people willing to countenance the genocide. The ideals of Western civilization were like tissue paper across the tracks of human hatred.

For many years, a memorial plaque placed at the camp by the Soviet authorities stated that 4 million people had been murdered at Auschwitz. The Polish communist government ... supported this figure. In the west, this figure was accepted, but some historians had their doubts.[13]
Auschwitz: Jewish Quarters 1940 People were transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau by trains, from all over Nazi-occupied Europe. They were generally sent in freight cars or cattle trucks. Often they travelled for days without toilet facilities and with nothing to eat or drink.
