Answer: Augmentin can be either twice or three times a day depending on the dosage. The dosage in children is weight based. 45 mg/kg/day for 12 hour and 40 mg/kg/day for 8 hour dosing.

Since both the Augmentin 250 mg and 500 mg tablets contain the same amount of clavulanic acid (125 mg, as the potassium salt), 2 Augmentin 250 mg tablets are not equivalent to 1 Augmentin 500 mg tablet. Therefore, 2 Augmentin 250 mg tablets should not be substituted for 1 Augmentin 500 mg tablet.

Augmentin should be taken every 8 or 12 hours, depending on the dosage strength. It may be taken with or without food, but taking it with meals or snacks will help prevent stomach upset. However, the extended-release form, Augmentin XR, should always be taken with food to improve absorption.
