Augmentin is the group name for formulations containing 2, 4 and 5 parts of a broad spectrum penicillin, amoxycillin and 1 part of potassium clavulanate. Potassium clavulanate has been shown [I]n vitro to be an irreversible inhibitor of ß-lactamase produced by: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoea and Bacteroides fragilis. Potassium clavulanate does not inactivate the chromosomally mediated (Sykes Type 1 Cephalosporinase) ß-lactamases produced by Acinetobacter species, Citrobacter species, Enterobacter, Indole positive Proteus, Providencia species and Serratia marcescens. In vitro the formulation showed synergism against amoxycillin-resistant organisms, with no evidence of antagonism and the activity was not reduced in the presence of serum.

The effects of Augmentin during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. Because there may be risk to the developing baby, doctors usually recommend Augmentin to pregnant women only when the benefits of therapy outweigh any potential danger. Augmentin appears in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. The data showed that Augmentin ES eradicated 97 percent of penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae, and 100 percent of penicillin-susceptible and intermediate-resistant S. pneumoniae bacteria. Augmentin ES ... eradicated 95 percent of H. influenzae and 100 percent of M. catarrhalis, including drug-resistant strains. H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis are known to produce an enzyme called beua-lactamase that renders these bacteria resistant to many antibiotics, including amoxicillin, penicillin and several cephalosporin antibiotics. Augmentin ES, which contains a substance called clavulanic acid, is specifically designed to inhibit beta-lactamase and therefore provides increased efficacy against H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis.
