Audrey Hepburn-Ruston was born May 4, 1929, near Brussels, Belgium. The daughter of an English banker and a Dutch baroness, she was sent to a girl's school near London after her parents' divorce. She was vacationing with her mother in Arnhem, Holland, when WW II broke out. She spent the war years in the Nazi-occupied town, attending a local public school and receiving ballet training at the Arhem Conservatory. After the war she went to London on a ballet scholarship. Graceful, slender, and long-legged, she soon began winning modeling assignments from fashion photographers.

In 1935 her parents divorced, one reason was that her father was a Nazi sympathiser; the divorce was very traumatic for Audrey, she would later say it was the most traumatic incident of her life, she was 6 at the time. After the war, despite suffering under the Nazi occupation, Audrey later tracked down her father to Dublin and supported him financially. From 1935-58 Audrey went to boarding school in Kent and in 1939 her mother moved the family to Arnhem in the Netherlands where she thought it would be safe from Nazi invasion.

Born Audrey Kathleen Ruston in Brussels, Belgium, she was the only child of John Victor Hepburn-Ruston[3], an Anglo-Irish banker, and Baroness Ella van Heemstra, a Dutch aristocrat descended from French and English kings. Her father later appended the name Hepburn to his surname, and her surname became Hepburn-Ruston. She had two half-brothers, Alexander and Ian Quarles van Ufford, by her mother's first marriage to a Dutch nobleman. She was a descendent of King Edward III of England.
