Audrey Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. She was an Academy Award winning actress and a humanitarian. Her acting career earned her many Oscar nominations but is was her humanitarian work that she felt most committed to. A long-time activist for charitable causes, in 1988, Hepburn was named the official spokesperson for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). She devoted all her energy to working with UNICEF. Her field missions were often physically and emotionally demanding and sometimes undertaken at great personal risk.

Shortly before her death in January 1993, Audrey Hepburn was given the Screen Actors Guild award for lifetime achievement. Unable to accept in person, she asked actress Julia Roberts (1967–) to accept the honor in her place. While Hepburn's acting was highly appreciated in her lifetime, she would probably rather be remembered as UNICEF's hardworking fairy godmother.

Hepburn devoted the last years of her life to her UNICEF work, travelling to war-torn places like Somalia to visit starving children. In 1992, already suffering from colon cancer, she was awarded the Screen Actors' Guild Achievement Award. She died the next year, succumbing to her illness on January 20 at her home in Switzerland. In 1956 Audrey played Natasha Rostow in "War and Peace", followed in 1957 by a superb performance in the classic film "Funny Face". In 1959 Hepburn received another Academy nomination for her role in "Nun's Story". She probably reached the pinnacle of her career in 1961 for her role in "Breakfast at Tiffany's", including still another Academy nomination.

The controversy over Hepburn's casting reached its height at the 1964–65 Academy Awards season, when Hepburn was not nominated for best actress while Andrews was, for Mary Poppins. The media tried to play up the rivalry between the two actresses as the ceremony approached, even though both women denied any such bad feelings existed and got along well. Julie Andrews won the award.
