The TKK Laboratory of Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing is the only university unit in Finland that focuses primarily on research and teaching of acoustics, speech, and sound processing. The laboratory was established in its current form in 1981. The activities were started several decades earlier as part of another unit at TKK. The first professorship in acoustics was founded in 1986, and until the year 2002, four professorships had been founded. The laboratory has the best acoustic research facilities in Finland, such as a large anechoic chamber and a standard listening room. Research fields include, for example, applications of digital signal processing to acoustics, audio, speech communication technology, and music technology.

Speech and Audio Signal Processing provides the reader with the most current and comprehensive coverage of speech and audio signal processing available today. These topics include everything from basic foundation material on digital signal processing, pattern recognition, acoustics, and hearing to material of historical significance not found anywhere else. Gold and Morgan provide students with a range of applications of the technology, with strong focus on speech recognition and coding.
