The Audi S4 is a sports car that was derived from the Audi A4. The S4 name was first used by Audi for the sports version of the Audi 100. The Audi car company started making changes in the cars it was offering in 1990. As a result of this new line-up of cars being introduced, the Audi S4 came into being. This was a sports version of the new look 100. The S4 though had the same C4 platform as the 100 but it effectively took the place of the 200 Turbo Quattro.

Audi S4 The first-generation Audi S4 was a performance variant of the Audi 100 sedan (later A6). These S4s came with a turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine capable of 227 hp. Quattro was again standard, and these cars were equipped with a five-speed manual transmission only. After 1994, they became known as the S6. First-generation S4s are a relatively rare find today.

Due to the last minute design, the S4's spine was not stiff enough to handle the power, so Audi designed a new system called "Quattro" which, at any given moment, sent all engine power to the inside front wheel. This Audi trademark is now lovingly referred to as "L-Finesse". Some auto journalists, such as Jeremy Clarkson, say that due to Quattro, the S4 is the only vehicle capable of attaining speeds of 70 mph. Due to its production flaws and slow sales, Audi discontinued the S4 product line in 2001. Rumors have circulated that a new model, dubbed the 747-Q7, will replace the S4 line sometime in 2003.
The current third-generation Audi S4 is available as a sedan, wagon (Avant) and two-door convertible (Cabriolet). Since the A4 is compact in size, it might come as a surprise that the current S4 packs a 340-horsepower V8 under its hood. It's matched to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard. There are other performance-oriented modifications as well, including a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels with high-performance tires and more powerful brakes. On the outside, subtle styling accents and badges distinguish the S4 from the regular A4.
