Audi debuted the first-generation A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) in 1994 on the Volkswagen B5 platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat. It had a longitudinal engine and standard front-wheel drive, although many of the A4 owners selected the optional quattro® four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door sedan; the Avant station wagon arrived a year later.

The 2008 Audi A4 is a four door vehicle that can be seat 5 passengers. The A4 is available in three versions, sedan, convertible and wagon. The A4 is powered by either of these two engines, a 2.0 Liter turbocharged engine that generates 207 horsepower or a 3.1 Liter V6 engine that generates 255 horsepower. While the sedan versions are only equipped with the Quattro All wheel drive, the sedan and convertible versions can choose between a four wheel and a Quattro All wheel drive. The versions equipped with the all wheel or four wheel drive can choose between a six speed manual transmission and a six speed automatic transmission.

The A4 was a sales success for Audi, and it put the brand back on the shopping lists of buyers looking for a serious performance marque.

Choices in the engine compartment are several but the standard 1.8 liter Turbo four delivers 170 hp and plenty of torque, which moves the 2004 Audi A4 along handily. Those wishing more urge can go for the 220 hp 3-liter V-6. At the far end of the scale is the S4's V-8, but that puts the S4 in quite another category. Quattro all-wheel-drive is available with all engines.

The next generation of Audi's top seller is said to be a bit shorter than today's A4, though probably no lighter. Word is that engines will be repositioned several inches further back for better front/rear weight balance and ... sharper handling.
