Audi A4 was launched in 1995 in place of the Audi 80 model. It carried a B5 chassis until its new design in 2002. One striking feature of this model is the longitudinal engine, which is mostly found in rear wheel drive vehicles. Initially, it was equipped with a 2.8 L 172-hp V6 engine and later, it ... got a 150-hp 1.8 L Turbo inline-4 under its hood. Recent models have bigger V6 engines that yield to greater horsepower. This vehicle is one of the best from Audi and was recognized by Car and Driver magazine as one of the best cars from 1996 through 1998 and in 2002.

The three diesels for the new Audi A4 are two V6 units and a four-cylinder inline engine. Their strong performance makes them ideal representatives of a modern, powerful form of sporting character. Winning the Le Mans 24-hour race in 2006 and 2007 with the Audi R10 competition car was ample evidence of the power that can be summoned up by the TDI principle. Audi first introduced this efficient technology back in 1989, and it has remained the most efficient in the world to this very day. Since then, the brand with the four-ring emblem has not ceased to develop its technological lead.

The first-generation Audi A4 (1996-2001) was a huge success for Audi, helping to put the automaker in the same league as its respected German luxury-car competitors. This was attributed in no small part to the A4's handsome Teutonic looks, impressive performance and stylish, well-constructed interior that set a precedent for future Audi models. A five-speed manual was standard, with Audi's five-speed Tiptronic automatic offered as an option. As is the case today, the base engine was a turbocharged four-cylinder, while the upgraded model came with a naturally aspirated six. Note that the A4 was initially available only as a sedan; the Avant didn't join the lineup until 1998.
