The cornerstone of Audi's confusing salvo to "put old luxury on notice" is the expansion of its lineup to fill every conceivable niche. The extension of the "R" line of products – beginning with the R8 – is rumored to include a convertible version of Audi's midship V8 super coupe, along with an R4, R6 and an R10.

Audi serves notice on old technology with Horsehead, a SuperBowl TV ad for the Audi R8 with references to The Godfather. The spot is a reference to the 1972 movie, The Godfather, in which film director Jack Woltz wakes to find himself sleeping next to the severed head of his favorite prized horse, a $600,000 stud named Khartoum.

If the Audi R8 put "old luxury" on notice with its Super Bowl commercial, then PPI is putting Porsche tuners on notice with its modified R8 Razor. Initially shown at the Essen Motor Show last year, the PPI R8 Razor aims to dramatically increase the performance of the stock Audi supercar with a series of modifications.

Audi is presenting a revolution in the top class at the North American International Auto Show 2008 – the first 12-cylinder diesel engine in a high-performance roadgoing sports car. In the production of the Audi R8, 70 workers fit 5000 unique parts by hand - the factory produces 25 cars a day. Ninety-five lasers inspect the entire car in 5 seconds to ensure that over 220 measurements are within 0.1 mm of the programmed plans.[4]
