A study compared the academic and learning characteristics of three students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders (AD/HD), three gifted students, and three gifted students with AD/HD. Giftedness conferred benefits related to specific talents but did not offer protection from the negative outcomes of AD/HD, such as inattention and homework problems.

At least 25 percent of children with ADD/ADHD have another close relative with the disorder. No specific gene has been linked to the disorder, but brain structure, the function of chemicals in the brain that regulate attention, and abnormal function of the prefrontal cortical lobe are thought to be related to the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Diet, food allergies, severe anemia, lead poisoning and psychological factors, such as depression, adjustment problems, lack of sleep, family stress, anxiety and abuse, may ... contribute to behavior consistent with ADD/ADHD.
