Although pediatricians, parents, and teachers have hoped for effective therapies and methods that do not involve medications for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), evidence to date supports that the specific symptoms of ADHD are poorly treated without medication. Perhaps the mildest cases of ADHD can be treated with moderate success with environmental restructuring and behavioral therapy, but other than these limited situations, pharmacotherapy often is needed.

Having good prenatal care, establishing behavior limits, teaching acceptable social skills and reading to a child everyday can help ward off or lessen learning and attention problems. Instead of punishing negative behavior, parents should actively encourage positive behavior by giving extra attention to their children by complimenting, hugging and using rewards when they are “good”. Experts advise keeping a child with ADD/ADHD on a regular schedule for mealtimes, bath time, bedtime and all extracurricular activities, as these, and most children thrive on a predictable routine. Parents of children with ADD/ADHD must ... realize that raising a child with this disorder can take its toll on them both emotionally and physically. These parents must take care of themselves and establish a good, reliable support system to help them weather the difficult times.

In the past decade, prescriptions for Ritalin, a stimulant medication commonly used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), increased five-fold, with 90 percent of all prescriptions worldwide consumed in the United States. As many parents grow leery of the traditional medical approach to ADHD, doctors of chiropractic are offering promising results with non-drug treatments that focus on postural muscles, nutrition and lifestyle changes that affect brain activity.
