Attention Deficit Disorder ranks among the most common neurological disorders among American children, affecting as many as 2 million. Currently about six million children are taking Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta or other ADD and ADHD medication. In every classroom in the United States, you can expect to find at least one child with Attention Deficit Disorder. ADD and ADHD boys outnumber girls by 3 to 1 in prevalence.

The "H" in ADHD means hyperactivity and is included in the disorder. According to recent studies, approximately 5% of children and 4.3% of the U.S. adult population, have ADHD. Chances are that in one way or another the average person is affected by ADHD. A person’s co-worker, spouse, grandchild, sibling, employee or anybody else for that matter may have ADHD.

Diagnostic criteria for all subtypes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are listed in the Diagnostic Statistical Manuals of Mental Disorder 4th Edition Revised. There is no single diagnostic test or procedure to diagnosis ADHD. Best practice indicates a comprehensive evaluation directed at contributing factors and severity of impact. Areas of assessment include IQ, academic achievement, and social/emotional functioning. Data are collected from children, teachers, and parents. Frequently the measures employed include a diagnostic clinical interview, behavior rating scales, classroom observations, and continuous performance tests.

Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) significantly affects the health-related quality of life for children, adolescents, and adults. There is a substantially lower health-related quality of life across multiple domains (e.g., physical, psychosocial) when compared with normative data for individuals without AD/HD (Klassen et al., 2004). Physical domains can include: physical health and functioning (e.g., including role and/or social limitations as a result of physical health). Psychosocial domains can include: social-emotional-behavioral problems, mental health, self-esteem, self-neglect, and impact on family functioning.

Since breath is deeply connected to the emotions, teaching yogic breathing exercises (pranayama) is an ideal way to start working with children who have attention deficit disorder. However, it is important for the Yoga teacher to first find a way to create a strong bond with the child, in order to gain the child's trust and attention. Then the exercises will progress more rapidly. In addition to its positive effect on the emotions, pranayama stimulates vital areas of the brain and central nervous system. By combining pranayama with Yoga poses (asanas) and deep relaxation, the benefits are greatly enhanced. With regular Yoga practice, children with attention deficit disorder develop greater body awareness, emotional balance and concentration - increasing their capacity for schoolwork and creative play.
