Many types of medications have been used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The most widely used drugs are stimulants. Stimulants increase activity in parts of the brain that appear to be underactive in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Experts believe that this is why stimulants improve attention and reduce impulsive, hyperactive, or aggressive behavior. For some children and adolescents, certain antidepressants may ... help alleviate symptoms of the disorder. Tranquilizers also have been effective for some individuals.

NIMH grantees are ... trying to determine if there are different varieties of attention deficit. With further study, researchers may find that ADHD actually covers a number of different disorders, each with its own cluster of symptoms and treatment requirements. For example, scientists are exploring whether there are any critical differences between children with ADHD who also have anxiety, depression, or conduct disorders and those who do not. Other researchers are studying slight physical differences that might distinguish one type of ADHD from another. If clusters of differences can be found, scientists can begin to distinguish the treatment each type needs.

Attention Deficit Disorder is a developmentally handicapping medical condition that first manifests itself in school age individuals. While 3-5% of the population is generally acknowledged to have a sound neurologically-based disorder, a far greater percentage of school children are currently diagnosed with ADD and usually continue to show symptoms throughout adolescence and adulthood.
