Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common psychiatric disorder of childhood and often persists into adulthood. ADHD is a neurophysiologic disorder defined in behavioral terms and associated with significant morbidity in the realms of social and academic success, and self-esteem. ADHD is often associated with comorbid psychiatric disorders and learning disabilities, which further impede the successful development of these persons. It is essential that family physicians be knowledgeable about the presentation and diagnosis of ADHD. Stimulant medications continue to be the mainstay of treatment, although many other medications (such as antidepressants and alpha blockers) are helpful adjuvants to therapy. Current recommendations for treatment include an individualized, multimodal approach involving parents, teachers, counselors and the school system.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a group of chronic disorders that begin in childhood and in some cases, last through adulthood. It is one of the most common childhood conditions, affecting anywhere from 4 to 12 percent of school-aged children, boys three times more often than girls.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, sometimes called ADHD, is a chronic condition and the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder among children and adolescents. It affects between 3 and 5 percent of school-aged children in a 6-month period (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1999).
Disruptive behavior disorders are more commonly known as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (1). Hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention categorize this disorder. While most individuals suffer from all three of the symptoms of ADHD, some individuals may only suffer from either inattention or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Individuals with this disorder have difficulty focusing attention on one thing, get easily bored, always seem to in motion, and have difficulty waiting(2). Although, individuals who suffer from ADHD do not have any physical problems, they face many social and emotional difficulties. These individuals face difficulties in their academic performance during their childhood, as well as later in their lives when they enter the work force (2) .
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an illness characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The most commonly diagnosed behavior disorder in young persons, ADHD affects an estimated three percent to five percent of school-age children.
