You have probably seen many recent articles, books, and television programs about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). One might get the impression that these problems have just been discovered. Psychologists have, in fact recognized and have been addressing these problems for many years. In the 60’s there was a great flurry of attention to these problems in children. Diagnostic procedures were not well developed at that time and some physicians were prescribing Ritalin to children in an almost indiscriminate manner. Since that time much research has been done on these disorders as they affect both children and adults.

Many children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder frequently show an altered response to socialization. They are often described by their parents as obstinate, impervious, stubborn, or negativistic. With peers, many affected children are domineering or bullying, and ... may prefer to play with younger children. Another characteristic often seen in children with the disorder is emotional lability. Their moods change frequently and easily, sometimes spontaneously, and sometimes reactively. Because of their behavioral difficulties, children with the disorder often have conflicts with parents, teachers, and peers.

Shire Pharmaceuticals Group plc announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved ADDERALL XR® (mixed salts of a single-entity amphetamine product) as a once-daily treatment for adolescents aged 13 to 17 with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Since October 2001, ADDERALL XR has been approved in the U.S. for treatment in children aged 6 to 12 years and since August 2004 in adults 18 years and older. ADDERALL XR is currently the most commonly prescribed brand of ADHD medication in the United States.
