Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition in which a person has trouble paying attention and focusing on tasks. It may begin in early childhood and can continue into adulthood. Without treatment, ADHD can cause problems at home, school, work, and with relationships. ADHD was once called attention deficit disorder (ADD).

As they enter adolescence, girls with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) show fewer symptoms of hyperactivity. But they continue to lag behind their peers academically and have a greater proclivity for other behavioral and emotional disorders as well as for substance abuse, according to new research from the University of California, Berkeley.

Most experts use the terms ADD and ADHD interchangeably. ADD/ADHD is not a learning disability; it is recognized as a specific neurological difference for which there is no accepted cure. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)... known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), is a behavioral disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The ADD or ADHD diagnosis, based solely on an individual's behavioral history, is made when several of the following characteristics are detected: fidgeting with hands or feet or squirming in seat; difficulty remaining seated; running about or climbing excessively; difficulty engaging in activities quietly; acting as if driven by a motor; talking excessively; blurting out answers before questions have been completed; difficulty waiting in turn taking situations; interrupting or intruding upon others. ADD or ADHD is thought to be caused by alterations in dopamine levels in the brain.

The three people you've just met, Mark, Lisa, and Henry, all have a form of ADHD--Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD is not like a broken arm, or strep throat. Unlike these two disorders, ADHD does not have clear physical signs that can be seen in an x-ray or a lab test. ADHD can only be identified by looking for certain characteristic behaviors, and as with Mark, Lisa, and Henry, these behaviors vary from person to person. Scientists have not yet identified a single cause behind all the different patterns of behavior--and they may never find just one. Rather, someday scientists may find that ADHD is actually an umbrella term for several slightly different disorders.
