Atlanta Hawks
built 223 days ago
When the subject is NBA tradition, the Atlanta Hawks aren't the first team that comes to mind. However, the Hawks are as venerable a franchise as any. The team's history extends back to 1946, when the squad was known as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. At that time the team was shared by three neighboring river cities (Moline and Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa) that straddled the Mississippi River. In later years the team played in Milwaukee and St. Louis and enjoyed the services of a handful of the NBA's most memorable stars. In 1958, as the St. Louis Hawks, the club earned its only championship.

The 2005-06 Atlanta Hawks have a lot to prove. After posting a league worst 13-69 record, the Hawks set out to improve their roster by drafting Marvin Williams out of UNC with the second pick in the draft. Williams joins Josh Smith and Josh Childress, a pair of NBA All-Rookie selections, on the floor of the Philips Arena. Fans with Atlanta Hawks tickets are gearing up for the long haul, hoping the youth movement Hawks management is pushing for will bear fruit in the near future.

On September 3, 1982, the Atlanta Hawks made a move that would shape their identity for the next decade. The Hawks sent John Drew and Freeman Williams to the Utah Jazz for rookie Dominique Wilkins. The former University of Georgia star and future "Human Highlight Film" earned a spot on the 1982-83 NBA All-Rookie Team by averaging 17.5 points. Rollins led the league in blocked shots with 343. Roundfield led Atlanta in scoring (19.0 ppg) and rebounding (11.4 rpg). But the Hawks won only one game more than in the previous season and were once again eliminated from postseason play in the first round.

The Atlanta Hawks have enjoyed a good amount of success since moving from St. Louis to Atlanta in 1969. In the 36 seasons of playing in Atlanta the team has advanced to the postseason 23 times. The greatest postseason game the Hawks have ever played has to be game 7 of the 1988 Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Celtics in Boston. The Hawks were carried throughout the season and the playoffs by superstar Dominique Wilkins. Wilkins was doing the same thing in the deciding game of this series and through three quarters he had scored 31 points. In the final 10 minutes the shootout between Wilkins and the Celtics superstar, Larry Bird, started.

In the summer of 2005, the Hawks completed a sign-trade deal with the Phoenix Suns that landed Atlanta Joe Johnson in return for Boris Diaw and two future 1st round picks. They ... signed Zaza Pachulia from the Milwaukee Bucks. These changes occurred after an apparent power struggle between the owners for nearly three weeks before the moves were made. [3]. Unfortunately, while the power struggle over Johnson has been resolved, the ownership situation remains in flux, with litigation still ongoing.
