The Atlanta Braves are a Major League Baseball team having their base in Atlanta, Georgia, since 1966. The team competes in the Eastern Division of the National League. The Braves have the honor of winning their division title 14 consecutive times beginning with 1991 and ending in 2005, omitting the strike-shortened 1994 season in which no division champions were officially crowned. Overall, the Braves have been successful in winning 16 divisional titles, nine National League pennants, and three World Series championships (1914, 1957, and 1995). The Braves have the distinction of being one of the only two remaining charter members left in the National League along with the Chicago Cubs.

The Atlanta Braves have avoided arbitration with OF Matt Diaz, by agreeing to a one-year contract worth $1.225 million, according to the Associated Press. He can earn an additional $12,500 each for reaching 450 and 500 plate appearances.

The Atlanta Braves franchise started in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings of the National Association (as Red Stockings: National Association Champions in 1872, 1873, 1874, and 1875). The team changed its name to the Boston Red Caps and joined the National League in 1876. As the Red Caps, the franchise played from 1876 - 1882, and won two pennants (1877, 1878). From 1883 - 1906, the franchise played as the Boston Beaneaters and won 6 pennants (1883, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1897, and 1898). The franchise stayed in Boston, but changed its name many times. They were the Doves from 1907 to 1910, then were known as the Rustlers in (1911), then became the Braves for the years 1912 to 1935 (which included a World Series win in 1914).

The Atlanta Braves made their first moves by re-signing Bob Wickman to a one-year deal. Then the Braves traded Horacio Ramirez to the Mariners for Rafael Soriano, an AL reliever. The team ... denied arbitration to Chris Reitsma and 2B Marcus Giles. Then they signed utility-man Chris Woodward. The biggest trade of the Braves involved 1B Adam LaRoche and Mike González, as well a minor league INF Brent Lillibridge. Later, Atlanta signed 1B Craig Wilson to a one-year contract to platoon with Scott Thorman.

The Canadian Press reports the Atlanta Braves insist SP Mike Hampton (elbow) is healthy as spring training approaches. "He's fine. He's 100 percent. He has no restrictions going into spring training," general manager Frank Wren said.
