Atkins Diet
built 279 days ago
The Atkins Diet, named after diet pioneer Dr. Robert C. Atkins, is a low-carbohydrate, low-sugar diet. Since the body burns both carbohydrates and fat for energy, Atkins contended that, by limiting one's carbohydrate intake, the body would burn more fat, thereby increasing weight loss. Consuming a high level of carbohydrates causes overproduction of insulin, according to Atkins, leading to increased hunger and weight gain. The Atkins diet allows unrestricted amounts of protein, including meats, eggs and cheese, and severely limits foods containing carbohydrates such as pasta, bread and fruit.

The principles behind the Atkins Diet are not new, the Eskimos have lived on a similar style diet for thousands of years. The western civilisation is getting fatter and fatter, even though fat-free products and calorie controled diets are well advanced. The Atkins Diet has now raised the profile of dieting because it has created momentum to the arguement the a low-fat, low calorie dieting does NOT work.

The Atkins Diet severely restricts the consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods and encourages the consumption of protein and fat. The diet is divided into four phases: Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Premaintenance, and Maintenance. During the Induction phase (the first 14 days of the diet), carbohydrate intake is limited to no more than 20 grams per day. No fruit, bread, grains, starchy vegetables, or dairy products (except cheese, cream, and butter) are allowed during this phase. During the Ongoing Weight Loss phase, dieters experiment with various levels of carbohydrate consumption until they determine the most liberal level of carbohydrate intake that allows them to continue to lose weight. Dieters are encouraged to maintain this level of carbohydrate intake until their weight loss goals are met.

Doctors seldom recommend the ketogenic diet for adults. However, in the limited studies that have been done, the diet seems to work just as well, although it is very restrictive for most adults. Studies are underway to evaluate the modified Atkins diet in this population.
