Atkins Diet: Weight
built 849 days ago
The Atkins diet has provoked storms of controversy since it was first published. The recommendation to eat a high-protein, low-carbohydrate flew in the face of all the dietary recommendations by established medical institutions. The diet was denounced as unsafe, particularly if used as a life-long weight maintenance plan. Over the past five to ten years, there have been numerous studies that come down on both sides of the equation, and Atkins last version of the diet included the admission that calories do matter, and the advice to ‘eat only enough to satisfy hunger’.
the four phases of the Atkin diet plan At this point, each person who strictly followed Atkins diet has already achieved his goal weight. On this phase 90 grams of carbohydrate daily are allowed. A lot of dieters would rather stay at 50-60 grams intake per day, in order to avoid gaining weight. Anyway, if a small weight gain occurs, up to 5 pounds, Dr. Atkins suggests a return to Induction phase. It is said that Lifetime Maintenance is the foundation of a better health and a thin figure.
Keep in mind that the Atkins Diet will not permanently change your body's metabolism. If you begin to eat refined carbohydrates and/or processed foods again, you will gain back the weight you lost. This low-carb diet is meant to permanently change your eating habits so that you keep of the weight you lost. For more information, visit http://www.atkins.com.
When you first start the Atkins diet almost all carbohydrates are eliminated from the diet this induces a state called ketosis where the body is tricked into thinking it is starving. Due to the low amount of carbohydrates in the Atkins diet the body burns glycogen instead of its preferred source of energy glucose (The breakdown product of carbohydrates). The body stores three times as water as glycogen so as it is burnt during the induction phase there is a large initial loss of water and therefore weight. This large initial weight loss is a main reason for the Atkins diets popularity. However many doctors say that ketosis is bad because it puts a strain on your kidneys and in prolonged ketosis muscle tissue is broken down. The initial water weight loss is put back on very quickly if you stop the diet
In 1972, Dr Robert Atkins (1930-2003) generated much controversy in the scientific world by claiming the answer to weight loss was a low carbohydrate diet. Revised versions were published in 1992 and 2002. Food products are available as well as a series of books (cookbooks, shopping guides, carb-counters).
