Atkins Diet: Studies
built 850 days ago
The low-carb, high-fat Atkins diet gets high marks in one of the biggest, longest head-to-head studies of popular weight-loss plans, beating the Zone, the Ornish diet and even U.S. guidelines. Even so, weight losses were modest and critics say the results show how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off.
Current estimates are that nearly 33-50% of cancers can be prevented through a healthy diet. The recommendations above come from hundreds of research studies which show a link between cancer prevention and a high intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Hundreds of studies ... support the link between a high fat diet, high intake of red meats and increased incidence of cancer. The Atkins plan defies all this research and translates into a diet that may put you at increased cancer risk. Don't think that adding supplements to your diet - which you must do on the Atkins plan - equals the same nutrition you get from eating real foods. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are loaded with thousands of substances, called phytochemicals, which are showing significant promise in chronic disease prevention.
For a decade, the government has advised Americans to stay away from fat and eat a diet based largely on carbohydrates. But as NPR's Richard Knox reports, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows the pyramid and other official guidelines are most likely obsolete. The Food Guide Pyramid is an American icon. At the base are breads, cereal and pasta -- up to 11 servings a day. Veggies and fruits are next, with two-to-five servings.
What's especially interesting -providing confirmation of the metabolic advantage of a high protein diet - is that the foods provided in this study were low carb, but NOT typical Atkins fare. Instead of lots of red meat and saturated fat, the subjects in this particular study ate mostly fish, chicken, salads, vegetables and unsaturated oils.
A head-to-head study of four popular diets gave a slight weight-loss edge to the Atkins diet. The study tracked the effects of the diets on 311 overweight or obese women over one year. The four diets in the study:
NARRATOR: And they hadn't just lost a few pounds, they'd lost twice as much as those on the low calorie diet. Not only did the Atkins diet actually work it was the hands down winner. It seemed you really could get thin without worrying about calories. But there remained the other unresolved issue. The scientists' biggest criticism of the diet was that the high fat would lead to high cholesterol which would clog the arteries and kill. Back in Pennsylvania Gary Foster embarked on a study to find out if the Atkins diet really did increase the risk of heart attack.
