Atkins provides a series of dietary phases, which most people pass through sequentially. Additional diets are provided for those who can't follow the path of the majority, such as those with food intolerances and a high metabolic resistance. The first two weeks of Atkins is the "induction" phase. During these 14 days, dieters are cautioned to follow detailed instructions exactly. The point of induction is to kick-start the body into lipolysis/ketosis, during which the metabolism can be "switched" to one that primarily burns fat for energy.

Millions of people have tried the Atkins Diet. Both the Internet and periodical literature are replete with testimonials to the efficacy of the diet. But first-hand accounts of adverse health effects experienced by Atkins Dieters are nearly non-existent, not because they don't exist, but because no one is accumulating them! This website is dedicated, first, to demonstrating, via the accumulation of first-hand testimonials, that there is, for some, a dark side to be reckoned with, and second, to stimulating scientific research so that would-be dieters may be aware of the risks and consequences before they decide to diet.

[N]utrition experts say the Atkins diet is not a practical long-term way to eat. Even the recent studies show that people "start to fade" on the diet at about the third to fifth month, says George Blackburn, director of nutrition at Harvard Medical School. "They just can't go without one of the food groups and be satisfied with the limited variety of foods on this diet."

Forbes.com surveyed ten popular diets earlier this year, and found the Atkins diet to be very expensive as well. Atkins eaters could expect to pay $100.52 a week in food costs, or 85% more than the typical American spends on food ($54.44). Only Jenny Craig and NutriSystem (nasdaq: NTRI - news - people ) were found to be more expensive.
