It is claimed that there is bad breath and fatigue under the Atkins diet: [11], [12], and Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine 68(2001): p.761. The presence of acetone in the breath of an Atkins dieter may indeed be detectable during ketosis, and in fact, quantitative measurement of acetone concentration in exhalation is a reliable indicator of ketosis [13]. Atkins himself acknowledged in the Revised Edition of his books that this phenomenon (bad breath) can and often does occur during the Induction and OWL phases.

Some Atkins dieters even report feeling more energetic after adapting to the low carbs and higher fat. It's likely... that most of them were relatively inactive. Low carbs and high activity don't go well together.

For many Atkins dieters these test strips become a powerful motivating tool. Since the plan is extremely strict with respect to the number of grams of carbohydrates you can consume in a day, even going slightly off that number can change the results of the test strips.

When carbohydrates are ingested they are broken down in the intestine into glucose and other sugars. Glucose then stimulates cells in the pancreas to secrete insulin to remove that glucose and take it into tissues to be used as fuel or stored. Protein and fat consumption don't have nearly the same impact on insulin production because the whole point of insulin is to maintain the stability of the sugar level.

This phase of Atkins aims to keep the dieter at their target weight for the rest of their life. The dieter will keep carbohydrate intake at a level that they have now learnt will maintain their target weight.
