The most prominent of Atkins's adventures on the bench was the trial of John Macarthur in 1808, an incident having an immediate part in the deposition of Bligh. In December 1807 Atkins issued a writ against Macarthur, who was part-owner of the Parramatta, for permitting some of the crew to land contrary to regulations. Macarthur was arrested, but released on bail of £1000. He immediately demanded payment of a debt owed to him by the judge-advocate for fifteen years. Atkins, evasive at first, eventually promised payment, but the promise remained unfulfilled for a week. When the Criminal Court met on 25 January 1808 Macarthur with 'a great torrent of threats and abusive language' disclosed Atkins's indebtedness and challenged his right to adjudicate, whereupon the bench of officers adjourned to take Bligh's advice.

Atkins has extensive experience on design and site supervision for substation structures of China and Light Power (CLP). The design works include foundation, excavation and lateral support, site formation, superstructure and cladding work. These designs are required to be submitted to statutory department for approval. In addition, site supervisions are provided to ensure the quality of works on housekeeping, environmental, safety, and progress of work.

A native of Massachusetts, Atkins attended Harvard College as a humanities student. Only later did he supplement his education with courses required for his future enrollment in Rochester Medical School. Atkins’s decision to become a physician occurred after his return from the South Pacific, where he was stationed as a Marine during World War II. Atkins was later appointed professor of medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. At the Barnes Hospital, Atkins began his research of infectious diseases and fever. Atkins ... served as a visiting physician at St. Louis City Hospital before joining Yale.
