Ativan (lorazepam) is a sedative medication that is most generally used to treat anxiety. Other accepted uses include treating insomnia, symptoms of severe alcohol withdrawal, relieving serial seizures in children (sublingual form), as a muscle relaxant, and reducing the suffering of chemotherapy patients who experience vomiting during treatment. Ativan is not generally recommended for long-term use, over 4 months duration, as this may increase the likelihood of physical withdrawal symptoms.

Ativan is not appropriate for everyone. The prescribing physician should understand the medical history prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to medications such as alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, clorazepate, diazepam, or oxazepam should not take Ativan. Ativan is a benzodiazepine. Patients with a medical history which includes asthma, bronchitis, COPD, emphysema, other breathing problems, glaucoma, kidney disease, liver disease, depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, or a history of drug or alcohol abuse may not be able to take Ativan, or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication. This medication is not approved for children under the age of 12.

Answer: Ativan is dosed by individual symptoms. Some individuals will require fairly high doses, some smaller. When side effects are seen, the drug should be decreased in dose. For some, depending on size, age and other medications this may be 0.5 tid or so. Others will develop tolerance over time and will need much larger doses. Toxicity in these individuals is rarely seen.
