Unfortunately, Ubuntu 7.10 is already in feature freeze, and won’t ship the free ATI drivers. Mark Shuttleworth said in an interview that even though it won’t be available in the initial 7.10 release, it will be installable via ATI’s installer, and the Ubuntu team will provide the new drivers via an update, once packaged and tested.

If you were to search the Catalyst forum for "monitor," you'd likely find thousands of topics, because that's just how many problems people have with their monitors and ATI drivers. This section is for those of you whose monitor is goes blank at random times, or if it just flat out dies after awhile and you get a "no signal" message.

The ATI EdgeClamp sample program uses the EXT_texture_edge_clamp extension to illustrate proper use of border colors in OpenGL. If the extension is supported by the driver, the application will show a green quad with borders. If the extension is not supported, a red quad will be displayed to illustrate how the borders should appear.

It goes without saying that ATI and Nvidia are locked in a battle for the desktops, notebooks, game consoles, TV tuners, and hearts of consumers. As in any good fight, sometimes it's not the combatants that decide the contest, but a bystander taking an interest in the outcome. Whether it's an OEM partner, software developer, or even CPU vendor, the idea is to not take a pummeling while a third party holds your arms behind your back.
