ATI's Ruby fictional female character In May 1991, ATI released the Mach8, the company's first product able to process graphics without the CPU. Mach32 debuted in 1992 and offered improved memory bandwidth and GUI acceleration performance. In 1994, the Mach 64 accelerator, powering the Graphics Xpression and Graphics Pro Turbo, debuted. It offered hardware support for YUV-to-RGB color space conversion in addition to hardware zoom, early techniques of hardware-based video acceleration.
Of the companies that provide a proprietary driver, the Open Source drivers for ATI's cards are the most fully featured. This is primarily due to the openness of ATI to registered developers who wish to develop for ATI's hardware.

The one thing ATI doesn't have, is the luxury of third party graphic card companies, ie...Creative. These companies can create more drivers based off the reference drivers. Therefore, it appears nVidia products have an outstanding driver release record.
ATI Technologies is a major designer and supplier of graphics processing units, motherboard chipsets, and video display cards. Founded in Canada in 1985, the company was bought by and merged into the micro-processor manufacturer AMD in 2006.
