Ati Drivers: Cards
built 640 days ago
AMD is strongly considering open-sourcing at least a functional subset of ATI's graphics drivers. It's time for X Window System, OpenGL, and client virtualization for which ATI binary drivers aren't available to escape the ghetto of the 1980s-era framebuffer. And what a boon for PR. If AMD's graphics cards were the only ones with open device drivers, it might affect a buying decision or two.

If you're using ATI you don't need to compile agpgart support in the kernel, all you need is to select drm and leave all the sub-menus unselected. ATI-driver has it's own agpgart driver. If you attempt to compile both they conflict with one another and 3d support is borked. Especially on the the nforce2 chipset. The nforce2 agpgart is only compatible with Nvidia video cards. If you want to, you can compile agp into the kernel but when you run fglrxconfig you have to make sure you tell it that you want it to use an external agpgart.

ATI was a fabless semiconductor company. The company conducts in-house research and development and outsourceed the manufacturing and assembly of its products. Its main competitor is NVIDIA in the graphics and handheld market. The flagship product, the Radeon series of graphics cards, directly competes with NVIDIA's GeForce. The two companies' dominance of the market forced other manufacturers into niche roles.

Videocards - ATI Drivers Section In this section you can discuss everything Catalyst related. Catalyst drivers are for all ATI based graphics cards. This is ... the place to discuss modified Catalyst drivers.

Both ATi and nVIDIA driver packs are such that any card based on their vga chips, will run using their drivers. Although as Platypus has pointed out, some manufacturers add extra features that are only accessible using the drivers from them.

That ATI FireGL 8800 is an UPGRADE to the frickin old Diamond FireGL 3000 video cards that diamond sold to ATI when they were bought out by S3! Those things are H.U.D. (as I have a 3000) and it can't do jacksquat on Unreal (like I hoped it would) The thing is optimized for OGL, so you can guess that the D3D support blows (Red Faction sucks it up) and besides that, the card is DESIGNED for MCAD (like the old diamonds. They use the same card-layout as Diamond did) Good luck if you buy it. Maybe it will work a little bit better than the old 3000 did.
