Atenolol is a drug belonging to the group of beta blockers, a class of drugs used primarily in cardiovascular diseases. Introduced in 1976, atenolol was developed as a replacement for propranolol in the treatment of hypertension. Hypertension is a clinical condition in which the arterial blood pressure in rest exceeds constantly 140/90 mm Hg (as defined by the World Health organisation). Hypertension is a risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and serious renal damage.

Atenolol is a prescription drug used for controlling high blood pressure, relieving symptoms of angina, and improving survival following a heart attack. Part of a class of drugs called beta blockers, atenolol works by blocking a specific type of beta receptor, which causes the reverse effect of stress hormones -- it decreases heart rate and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as the workload of the heart.
